Can I have icecream or chocolate on Mounjaro? My honest take
Many people wonder if sweet treats, a choc bar here and there or icecream are totally off limits with GLP-1. Here's my honest take on the matter.
First things first: you are not on a diet - you are on a path towards lifestyle change. And with all lifechanging things, being radical and limiting is seldomly a good idea.
So does that mean you can eat some icecream, a piece of cake or some chocolate while on Mounjaro? Hell of course you can. Is it a good idea to eat it everyday or replace every meal with sweet treats? Most certainly not.
Strength in moderation
As with all things moderation and a considerate approach is king. A little pick-me-up here and there is fine, I also have icecream when we’re out on a walk and it hits me - but I don’t buy big family packs of the most chocolate- and fat-laden stuff anymore. We do buy family packs but we try to go with popsicles since they are smaller, kind of “contained doses” of icecream and I track those without exeception.
Don’t restrict but limit yourself
There is a difference between putting hard restrictions on yourself vs. limiting some behaviors we all know can derail a weightloss endeavour. I mean be honest: if you shoot up with Mounjaro on Friday and then have a chocolate, chips and soda orgy on the weekend, this counteracts the intention completely.
From my standpoint, taking a GLP-1 medication comes with responsibility. The responsibility to do my part in the equation, to assist the drug and my body in getting healthy and acting like a jerk won’t help.
Mounjaro should be no blank slate for indulgence
I mean honestly, it is up to you. You can get away with eating crap while on GLP-1, you can lose weight but is that a healthy approach? I’d object. For me, Mounjaro (or Wegovy or Ozempic or the upcoming Retatrutide) are tools to assist you in your journey, not provide a “get out of jail for free” card.
Will I eat a cheeseburger or have a chocolate bar from time you time? You bet. But will I log it and see that I somehow compensate the calories and balance the nutrients? Also yes.
Pick the better options
One thing that I can recommend if you have a sweet tooth (like me) and want something chocolatey from time to time is protein-rich options: here in Spain, a lot of shops have protein chocolate pudding that - depending on which store you hit - also is pretty low in sugar, has high protein (20g+) and also is a manageable size. Just pop open one of those when you really want something, dig in and make to enjoy your treat to the max - then log it and be fine with it. No need to beat yourself up, no weakness here - you just ate something 😉
